YouTube Goes To Widescreen Player

In a move that should see them grab a large chunk of the HD video and movie trailer hosting business Apple's Quicktime based sites currently enjoy, YouTube has moved to a 960 pixels wide format player for videos shown on their site.

Embedded videos will remain served in the traditional format, probably to retain backward compatibility for all the sites out there currently using them.

I guess this will also give users more reason to click through to the original YouTube video page from site's hosting embedded videos too.

Hidden Google Layoffs? 10,000 To Go?

The normally quite reliable Webguild.org website is reporting that Google has sacked 500 of their recruiters since August, and has plans to trim their 30,000 odd head count by 10,000 workers.

Maybe even more sensational is the allegation that Google is able to avoid the mandatory SEC reporting of layoffs by keeping these 10,000 workers classified as temporary, through systematically shuffling them around the organization.

Problems After iPhone 2.2 Update

Most people have been pleased with the latest iPhone update to version 2.2. Download and installation have worked fine for the vast majority and new features and other tweaks have been applauded.

As people start to use 2.2 some bugs will appear, but so far only a spelling error in the menu had popped up. http://www.zoonsky.com/iphone-v22-update-oops

Until Twitter user scottj (http://twitter.com/scottj) reported an unusual one with how the emailed images are now saved and used within the phone.

It's too much to explain, and scottj does a much better job than I could using pictures on his blog, so I'll let him tell you the full story.
